     Troop Trains were important to the United States

The first war in which trains were used to carry Americans to battle was the Mexican War in 1846. Extensive use of trains to carry troops occurred in both World Wars.

   New York Central Home Page: Second Section
The New York Central System was home of the Great Steel Fleet of passenger trains including the 20th Century Limited and Empire State Express. Known as The Water Level Route, it served customers between New York/Boston and Chicago, as well as many other cities in the Eastern United States. It included the Boston & Albany, Pittsburgh & Lake Erie, Peoria & Eastern, Big Four, Michigan Central, among others.

     Poughkeepsie & Eastern RR North from Poughkeepsie
Part of the The Central New England Railway (CNE) was the Poughkeepsie & Eastern (P&E). This section ran North from Poughkeepsie. The name P&E did not actually last very long. It started out in 1872 as the P&E Railroad but the name was changed shortly to PH&B. A few years later it became the NY&M and then in 1893 it was changed back to P&E Railway. This was all the same railroad with different names. It was abandoned by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad.

   Chicago Rail Fair of 1948-1949
In a recent National Railway Historical Society Bulletin I read that at the time of the Chicago Rail Fair of 1948, Chicago had 22 Class 1 railroads, 9 switching/terminal roads; 6 industrial railroads and 3 suburban (interurban) roads.
