SMS Frequently Asked Questions

The Basics
Q:   What is SMS?
A:   "SMS" stands for "Short Message Service," otherwise known as text messaging.
 
Q:   What is the benefit of using WebRing SMS?
A:   Primarily, you can receive alerts regarding your WebRing account. Such alerts include new submissions, WR Messages, updates to your ring memberships, comments added to your blog, and new posts to forums. You can also communicate instantly with other WebRing members.
 
Q:   How do I register my phone?
A:   You can either look for the "Register your cell phone" link on your My Account page, or you can go here.
 
Q:   How do I change my registered phone number?
A:   Use the “Enter and Validate” your cell phone link on the “Edit Profile” page, accessed from your My Account page.
 
Q:   Why am I only allowed 160 characters?
A:   When it comes to SMS, 160 characters is the industry standard.
 
Messaging
Q:   How do I send a text message?
A:   There are 2 ways to send a text message. From your My Account page, click the link that says "Send a Text Message" to open the Send Text Message window. Also, you can use the "Text Message" link anywhere you find a "contact " dropdown link for a member (shoutbox, forum, profile and some hub pages for instance). If the member has registered their phone, and allows you to text them, then you can (if you are not approved you will be givent he option to contact via email instead.
 
Q:   How do I reply to a text message?
A:   You can't, because our current configuration only allows for outgoing text messages. If you want to initiate a phone-to-phone text message session, make sure to include your cell number with your initial text message.
 
Q:   How do I contact other WebRing members?
A:   From the Send Text Message window, you can enter in the WebRing member's user ID. You can also auto-fill the "To:" field by using the "Text Me" link found beside the other members ID (only visible if they registered their cell phone).
 
Q:   Can I text other members directly from my phone?
A:   Not initially. Once you have started a text messaging session via WebRing, make sure to swap cell phone numbers. At that point, you can begin your own phone-to-phone text messaging sessions.
 
Q:   Can I send photos or videos with this service?
A:   Nope. SMS is strictly for text messaging. However, we are developing a file sharing program that will allow you to do just this. Watch for it coming later in Fall 2008.
 
Credits
Q:   How many credits does it cost to send a text message?
A:   Each text message costs 1 credit to send. The cost of member-to-member text messages are split 50/50 between the involved members. If the intended recipient does not have enough credits, the sender can choose to pay the full credit. If the message is sent to a non-WebRing member, the sender pays 1 full credit.
 
Q:   How many credits do I get for free?
A:   You accrue SMS credits on a daily basis based on how many Activity Points you earn. Here's the breakdown:
  • Free members (WebRing 1.0) WITHOUT a registered mobile phone = 1 SMS credit for every 60 Activity Points earned
  • Free members (WebRing 1.0) WITH a registered mobile phone = 1 SMS credit for every 30 Activity Points earned
  • Premium members (WebRing 2.0) WITHOUT a registered mobile phone = 1 SMS credit for every 30 Activity Points earned
  • Premium members (WebRing 2.0) WITH a registered mobile phone = 1 SMS credit for every 15 Activity Points earned
WebRing 1.0 members can accrue up to 50 SMS credits and WebRing 2.0 members up to 100! It doesn't matter how long it takes for you to earn enough Activity Points. You will be able to “buy” more via the Rewards Room in the near future. See next question for details. Want 2.0?
 
Q:   How do I get more credits?
A:   Coming soon: Look for the "Add SMS Credits" link on your My Account page to add credits. . You will be able to "buy" more via the Rewards Room in the near future. Once in place, you will be able to purchase more credits at the following rates: 10 Activity Points per SMS credit for WebRing 1.0 members, and 7 Activity Points for WebRing 2.0 members. Additionally, free members (WebRing 1.0) can purchase more credits for 10 cents each, and premium members (WebRing 2.0) can purchase more credits for 7 cents each.
 
Management
Q:   How do I change my alert settings?
A:   Coming soon From the My Account page, click on the "Edit Profile" tab. On the page that opens, click on the "Profile Settings" link. The page that opens will allow you to change your alert settings. If you don't see your alert settings on the page that opens, click on the "edit" link next to the word "Profile:" This will drop down your settings options.

Note: until this feature is released, only WebRing members WITH a registered cell phone can send text messages to other WebRing members.
 
Q:   How do I manage my WebRing account directly from my phone?
A:   Our current configuration does not allow for you to manage your account directly from your phone.
 
Q:   How do I create/manage a contact list?
A:   Coming soon.
 
Q:   Can I access an archive or history of my text messages? If so, how?
A:   We currently have no plans of programming this feature, as we're not sure it would be used that often. Do you feel differently? Let us know at feedback @ webring.com.
