This is an open discussion forum for users to discuss WebRing features, wishes, thoughts, etc. QUESTIONS about and PROBLEMS with the System should be posted in detail using the support forums in Help. WebRing Just Committed Suicide - 09/28/2006
You have got to be kidding! The 'benefits' of WebRing's lunatic new scheme will be chaos and a mass exodus of both ringmasters and members...in fact, nobody needs to walk out because WebRing is going to eject most of us if we don't pay through the nose to participate in a system that is largely in existence because WE have supported it, extended it and publicised it.

For years we have put up with rude and arrogant Technical 'Helpers' and wholesale interference in our right to run our OWN rings in the ways we choose. Now WebRing intends to confiscate communities and the intellectual property associated with them on a scale that would make Hitler and Stalin envious.

I urge everybody to stand firm and refuse to pay. After they have finished removing every member from all but a handful of rings, there will be nothing left that is worth paying for in any case.

I maintain over 40 rings on webring! I do not want to pay for the honor of being a maintainer as it was free to have as many webrings as you want! I will start deleting all of my rings if this goes into effect. I do not have a Credit Card nor do I want to pay for the honor of maintaining a webring on this site. I have been a loyal webring ringmistress since nearly the begining and now this? I do not want to pay and yet I have over 40 rings that I do not wish to delete as some of them have over 60 websites attached to it. I will delete them all.

Also, I liked being here. I have supported this group to other people who asked me about webrings. I have sent people here. I have clicked the google ads that show up on my ring pages. I do not want to lose all of my rings because of this membership program. Are you guys in need of money that badly that you are going to risk losing rings as I have already gotten 10 invites to take over rings! People are already vacating their rings to be adopted by others! Please reconsider this! Keep the rings free!

oh my word and there is me adopting all the rings I didn't know it costed to adopt and take care of needy children?
This is a joke right or are webring going to charge its users?

I for one am not going to pay, I run a personal hobby type site as do all my ring memebers. WHY would I want to pay for traffic when my site makes not a single cent? Why should we pay for the honor of promoting (in anyway whatsoever) WebRing who in return will be making money from our efforts? Why should we continue to provide free hosting and bandwidth to house the images that make THEIR navbars pretty? Yes THEIR navbars, they have made it quite clear that we do NOT own our webrings. Face it, the only thing we are needed for is the prettying up of navbars and to make sure that the sites which get on the rings we "look after on their behalf" fit the theme...otherwise we serve no purpose whatsoever. Except maybe to try and con other users into joining so that they can profit from them and use them in the same fashion.

Yes WebRing I am horrified at what you plan to do, surprise surprise.

I am also getting loads of invitations to take over rings that are being abandoned due to this totally stupid idea.

You hit the nail on the head, Wizanda - anybody who put real time and effort into this system just got set up. I don't know if this qualifies as "suicide" on Webring's part, but they are certainly going to seriously downsize themselves. Figure that participation was getting to be something that many of us weren't feeling completely sure about even when we thought that this was going to stay a free service, and now we're being told "Surprise! Cough up lots of money, or your work goes to waste"? I guess Ringsurf is going to get that big shot in the arm that it's been waiting for, courtesy of Tom Killeen, as people switch over.
